This station is a critical part of Beaverton’s drinking water system. A hydropower turbine has been added to constantly generate clean energy as water moves through the system. Beaverton can offset the typically high energy cost of water delivery with this process.
Beaverton is now one of the first cities in the state to have a renewable energy power generator created from its municipal water system. The hydropower turbine will be able to generate enough renewable and carbon-free energy to offset about of the energy load of the Sexton Mountain Pump Station, which will save the city thousands of dollars every year for the next 50 to 100 years.
Mayor Lacey Beaty said:
“Sustainability is a core priority for our city, and we believe it must be woven into every aspect of our operations.”
She added that projects like this enhance the financial stability of the city while also reducing its carbon emissions. She commented that Beaverton is again at the forefront of innovative solutions, which other cities across the country can follow.
Flyer printing can be used to inform residents of such projects and their benefits for a city.
The Energy Trust of Oregon provided half of the project costs of the new turbine, as well as the required engineering work.
