Tracey Kidder’s book, “Rough Sleepers: Dr. Jim O'Connell’s Urgent Mission to Bring Healing to Homeless People,” will be the book for the reading program of One Book, One Beaverton presented by the Beaverton Public Library.
In the book, Kidder, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, chronicles the work of Dr. Jim O'Connell, who dedicated his career to caring for the unhoused residents of Boston, especially those living on the streets. What began as a one-year service commitment became a lifelong mission. Over five years, Kidder accompanied O’Connell on nighttime rounds, witnessing his compassionate approach to providing essential supplies medical care, and human connection to some of the city's most vulnerable people.
Kidder, a graduate of Harvard University who also studied at the University of Iowa, is an acclaimed author whose honors include the Robert F. Kennedy Book Award, the National Book Award, the Pulitzer Prize, and many other distinctions of a literary nature.
Beginning on Saturday November 1, free Copies of the book will be available at the library at a special book giveaway while supplies last. At the Maim Library, the hours will be from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and at the Murray Schools Branch from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. In addition, the Reser will host An Evening with Author Tracy Kidder on Saturday January 17.
