Beaverton to host benefit for homeless

To raise awareness about and address homelessness, the City of Beaverton and Family Promise are inviting residents to a special event at Beaverton City Fountain Park.

Officials will be creating a controlled homeless experience so residents can both see and feel what homeless students and adults experience daily in the Beaverton School District.

Interim chairwoman of the board of Family Promise, Jolene Guptill, said there is an increasing number of members of the community sleeping in cars in the neighborhood. It is hoped that just one night in a car will enhance people’s understanding of the impact this has on daily living, between brushing one’s teeth, eating food without a refrigerator, and not being able to sleep without interruption.

The “Drive In—Sleep Out” event will take place beginning Saturday June 10 at 5:00 p.m. and run until Sunday June 11 at 10:00 a.m. The fee for an overnight stay in a car is $25 while the activities of the evening, which include a movie, entertainment, and food, are free, although donations are encouraged; proceeds are going to benefit Family Promise of Beaverton.

Poster printing companies can be hired to create posters that can be displayed throughout the city so residents are made aware of events like these and can contribute in some way to such worthy causes.
