Beaverton to gain new Filipino restaurant

A new lechonería – meaning a restaurant specializing in pork – will be coming to Beaverton this spring.

Chef Carlo Lamagna is planning to open Magna Kubo, which will be a Filipino restaurant based on the Magna Kusina eatery he currently runs. The new restaurant will feature a Filipino version of a Southern meat-and-three, which is a dish of meat and dishes that create a platter; a pork belly and rice bowl; egg noodle pancit canton; and lumpia as signature dishes. Lamagna will also be offering whole fish and smoked brisket roasted in the Brazilian-style rotisserie that will be at the restaurant.

Such upcoming establishments often turn to local print shops to create flyers and other materials to help promote their opening.

Magna Kubo will be 500 square feet larger than Lamagna’s current Magna Kusina eatery. He plans to serve batch cocktails, beer, and wine. The atmosphere will be cozy and casual with some bright colors coming from a mural on an inside wall.

The restaurant is named after the Tagalog word for hut. Lamagna said the goal of the new eatery is to bring this style of cooking to Beaverton so locals can enjoy the kinds of foods he ate during the late hours of the nights while growing up in the Philippines. Kevin Balonso will be chef de cuisine and will run the restaurant.

Magna Kubo will be on Southwest Broadway Street, with an expected opening in March.
