Beaverton seeks more sites for the homeless

The city of Beaverton is currently investigating sites where the homeless can stay for the night in safety as part of its Safe Parking Pilot Program.

The non-profit Just Compassion and several area churches work together on the program and designate places where individuals can park and not be towed, with access to garbage disposal and showers. They also put together case management services to help such individuals and families to find permanent homes. Poster printing is often used for such programs so that the homeless will know where they can find such services.

Denny Doyle, mayor of Beaverton, said that there are now two sites participating in the program, and the pilot program allows for up to five sites. The city wants to find more locations within the city limits but has been discussing the possibility of allowing more such sites outside the city limits in neighboring Washington County.

Doyle added that the significance of the program is that these sites provide more than just a parking place for the night. The role of case management is an essential part of the program so that these individuals can be connected with permanent housing, employment, and the ability to further their education.

The cost of the program, which is $42,200 for the pilot year, covers the cost of portable restrooms and onsite storage and the contract with Just Compassion.
