Beaverton scores on annual report card

The annual report cards were recently released by the Oregon Department of Education, and showed that the Beaverton School District outperformed averages on every level across the state.

The report cards measure how many students in grade ranges of three to five, six to eight, and students in the 11th grade met or exceeded the benchmarks for the state in math, English, and science.

The data come from the previous school year, and school districts use the date for comparison against other districts and determine educational strategies.

Chief academic officer for the Beaverton School District, Ginny Hansmann, said the data is used to improve instruction and is scrutinized closely.

Perhaps due to innovative projects in the district – such as the Future Ready bus, in which STEM-friendly educational materials are brought to different schools in the district – Beaverton performed better than neighboring school districts in the science benchmark for 11th grade.

The public communications officer for the district, Maureen Wheeler, added that the district has started the AVID program, which highlights students with potential but who are experiencing a degree of difficulty in their academic endeavors, and helps them in their educational path.

Print companies could be used by high-performing districts create mailers, which can be sent to residents outlining the progress the district has made and any plans for improvements in certain areas.
