Beaverton receives federal funds for improving the downtown
A federal grant has been awarded to the city of Beaverton in the amount of $2m to enhance the sidewalks and roads in the downtown area.
Improving safety from the Beaverton Library to the new Patricia Reser Center along Hall Boulevard and Watson Avenue is the focus of the Beaverton Downtown Loop Project.
Lacey Beaty, mayor of Beaverton, said this project will be transformational for the city. Beaty added that the city has worked hard to bring in more people, restaurants, and retail establishments to the heart of the city, so now it is time to invest in traffic issues so that sidewalks are well lit and able to accommodate both pedestrians and cyclists. Protected bike lanes will help the latter group.
Beaty said this project will reimagine the image of downtown and add many new jobs to city, which might lead some people in the city to put in a business card printing order.
The federal government awarded only three planning grants, which were funded by Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity, to the state, so receiving these funds was significant for the city.
Beaty said that planning the project will take place over the next two years, adding that construction will last between five and ten years at a total cost of between $20m and $30m.
