Beaverton community assists in plan for affordable housing

At a community meeting recently held at the Highland Park Middle School, residents of Beaverton agreed that more housing and financial assistance should be provided by the city to help the housing crisis in the region.

The city had received $31m as part of a housing bond of $653m that was approved by Portland regional voters last year, and the comments from the community will help to develop a plan for those funds. The affordable housing manager for the city, Javier Mena, said that the feedback will be used to determine where to invest in affordable housing and how to work with partners to improve the access to housing.

Once the relevant staff of the city present a draft plan to the City Council, another meeting will be held next month for the entire community. Posters and other materials created by print shops can be created to inform the community of such meetings and help to attract more people to such meetings. Beaverton will receive its share of the bond money after the Metro Council and the City Council give their final approval to the plan.

Denny Doyle, mayor of Beaverton, said that housing availability and affordability is a problem many cities in the United States experience and it is important that all members of the community get involved in the planning process.
