The finishing touches have been completed on the outdoor public plaza at the Public Safety Center in Beaverton, but it now needs a name.
Suggestions for its name are being requested by city officials from Beaverton who may turn to poster printing to encourage residents to participate in such activities. Suggestions can be the name of a resident in Beaverton who is living or deceased, a general name, or a tribal name. The submissions from the public will be reviewed by a committee of community volunteers and will present to the Beaverton City Council in June a small selection of names for consideration.
The volunteer committee will determine the criteria for the selection of names later this month and then meet in April and May to choose their favorite names. Members of the committee will consist of members from the diversity advisory board and the arts commission as well as those from three local neighborhood associations.
The public plaza has three stainless steel sculptures created by artist Blessing Hancock and are abstract Forms of Beaverton police badges. There are LED lights to illuminate the sculptures. The lights change colors and include words that reflect the motto of the Beaverton Police Department, which were collected by the community in 2019.
There will be an unveiling event in August for the sculptures and the name selection.
