Valley Stream to honor military with banners

The village of Valley Stream has introduced the Valley Stream Military Banners Program.

This will enable residents to hang banners honoring a loved one who served in the military along with their name, a photograph, branch, rank, and years of service. The banners will be along the route of the Memorial Day Parade. They will start at the Wheeler Avenue Elementary School, follow Rockaway Parkway and Valley Stream Boulevard, and end at the Village Green at the Veterans Memorial Monument.

Brian Howley, general village supervisor, said that if there are more banners than can fit along the parade route, then these can be added to the parks in the village, He added that there will also be a map online of the placement of the banners.

Officials from the village are encouraging interested residents not to delay submitting an application, as it may take time for them to look through Boxes in storage in order to find the right photograph and needed information.

Assistant to the mayor, Barbara DeGrace, said that the goal is to have most of the banners up in time for the Memorial Day Parade. DeGrace added that this means that requests need to be submitted to the supervisor’s office by the end of April to allow for turnaround time in the banner printing process.
