Syosset workshop to make sense of the five senses
A local laboratory is offering a chance for young people to engage in some hands-on learning.
Kids between the ages of 10 and 13 are welcome to participate in a workshop that will explore the neuroscience involved each time they experience the world through their five senses.
Cold Springs Harbor Laboratory has invited youth from Syosset and other communities in the surrounding area to be included in its “Making Sense of Your Senses” workshop, which is part of its Saturday DNA programming. The participants must be accompanied by an adult chaperone, and interactive learning and other fun will be the order of the day.
The group will learn about all of the five senses and how the human brain uses them to interpret the world around it. Taste, hearing, smell, sound and touch will all be explored, and the attendees will also discover how the brain can be fooled by tricks such as optical illusions.
Registration for the workshop is now open, and the fee is $22.00. By making learning fun, this sort of activity can help kids develop a lifelong interest in science. Providing the learners and their parents or guardians with printed schedules of upcoming club events can make it easy for them to take part in the ones that interest them, and these can be obtained from area print shops.
Cold Springs Laboratory will be welcoming kids and their parents for this workshop on November 2. More details can be found on its website listing.
