Syosset offered inside scoop on ocean corals

While they may look like they are made of stone, corals are very much alive, and a Syosset area afternoon will explore these marine animals in depth.

The more than 6,000 known species of coral will be the stars of an activity planned for Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and DNA Learning Center. It is intended for youth between the ages of 10 and 13, and they must have an adult chaperone attend with them.

The session will explore corals and the vital role they play in the ocean’s ecosystems. They will learn about their various growth patterns and also how they have adapted over time. There will be guides available to help identify an assortment of specimens, and everyone will discover how DNA has been used to differentiate between corals that may look alike but are genetically distant. Information about how marine biologists utilize molecular biology for coral identification and conservation will be provided, and each $50 admission grants entry for one adult and youth pair.

A hands-on workshop or other learning activity may help to spark an interest in young people. Handouts, signage, labels, name tags, and other custom printed products can be crafted by Print shops for an event.

This inside scoop on corals will be on offer on Saturday, March 22. The schedule kicks off at 10:00 am and wraps up at 12:00 pm.
