Zipcar asks village for six dedicated parking spaces

A Rockville Centre resident, Anthony Fatone, has made a formal request for designated parking spaces at a board of trustee’s public briefing session.

Fatone, who is also a regional manager for Zipcar, proposed to the board on January 4 that the company be provided with six parking spaces. Zipcar is asking for two spaces at locations near the Molloy College dorms, at the AvalonBay apartment complex, and at the local Long Island Rail Road station.

Zipcar is a car sharing service designed for those who do not own a car but occasionally have a need for one. The members can rent a car by the hour, day, or even week. They are issued a card that unlocks the cars and must return cars to their “home” parking spaces when finished. Included in the rental price are insurance and gas.

Before the village partners with a flyer printing service to inform its residents of what having Zipcar here will entail, details of an agreement will need to be worked out.

Zipcar would pay for the spaces monthly, and agreements with municipalities are flexible with annual and month-to-month agreements available. Designated parking spots would be marked and members would need to have access to the cars 24 hours a day. Members returning cars only to find the space occupied would contact Zipcar’s 24/7 call center for help.
