Nassau ranks above neighbors in county health rankings

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has released its 2015 County Health Rankings, and Nassau County made a favorable showing among New York State counties.

Among the 62 counties in New York, Rockville Centre residents will be happy to know that Nassau County garnered fifth place in overall health outcomes. Numerous criteria were used to determine the listing. Nassau did particularly well in health behaviors, length of life, social economic factors, and clinical care, placing in the top five counties in each of these categories.

Nassau did not do quite so well in the physical environment category where it ranked ninth, and in one category did not make it into the top ten. When it comes to quality of life, Nassau received its lowest ranking, coming in at 20th.

Counties ranking higher than Nassau were Rockland, Putnam, Saratoga, and Tompkins. Nearby Queens and Suffolk Counties ranked 12th and 15th respectively, while Kings County (Brooklyn) came in at 43rd.

The County Health Rankings, which are compiled for every state, can be used to improve public health. The date and analysis contained in the report enable counties to determine what is contributing and detracting from their residents’ health and how their county compares to others in the state.

Information gleaned from the County Health Ranking report can be sent by local health officials to Print companies to put in brochure form and distributed to the public.
