Top national award won by New Rochelle university

The highest award was won by the Model United Nations team of New Rochelle’s Iona University at the National Model United Nations Conference in Washington, D.C. this year. The team represented Honduras and won the Outstanding Delegation distinction.

Announcements of such awards is often made known throughout a campus and the surrounding community with banner printing.

Devon Gabriel, class of 2024, and the president of the club, also won Outstanding Delegation within the committee of the World Health Assembly. Gabriel was the only sole leader of his delegation honored in this way, and expressed his excitement about the win for his team.

He said that to win the award they did, everyone needed to work hard in a cooperative effort. He added that participating in these conferences has improved his problem-solving skills, increased his confidence in public speaking, and increased his appreciation of people from different cultures.

The event coordinator and chair of social media for the team, Jocelyn Ariza-Arroyo, class of 2024, said that participating in Model UN has provided many opportunities for her, and enabled her to visit the path of many people she idolizes. She also enjoyed visiting the Supreme Court, Capitol Hill, and the Washington and Lincoln Memorials.

The team will now be travelling to Harvard University in February to participate in the next National Model United Nations conference.
