Sister cities honor Bastille Day

New Rochelle will be celebrating Bastille Day to commemorate its founding 328 years ago by French Huguenots.

The event will be presented by the New Rochelle Sister City Committee and will include greetings by the mayor, Naom Bramson. There will also be a brief note on why Bastille Day is celebrated by member of the Committee Sheila Sarkar; and a short talk on the initiative programs of the sister city by Committee Convener Peter Korn.

The tri-color flag of the French republic will be raised and everyone will sing ‘La Marseillaise’ and ‘The Star Spangled Banner’. Afterwards, a light reception will take place in the Rotunda.

In the evening at Jolo’s Vegan Restaurant, the New Rochelle Jazz Festival will perform with Nico Moretti, a guest pianist from Paris. This concert is part of the city’s program of Jazz in July, which was organized by Brian Carter. Carter has performed many times in New Rochelle’s sister City, La Rochelle, France.

The Sister City initiative is designed to deepen the friendship that has formed between New Rochelle and La Rochelle over the past 328 years. The Committee might want to look into various printing services to make people in the city more aware of this connection and the celebrations.

The celebration will take place on Thursday, July 14, with additional performances of the Jazz Festival in the downtown area on Friday and Saturday.
