New sports business minor to be offered in New Rochelle

Iona University in New Rochelle will be launching a new minor in sports business.

The minor will require 18 credits and will be offered through the LaPenta School of Business. It will have an interdisciplinary approach by exploring how traditional fields of business such as marketing and finance relate to sports. The minor will also include a course on events and facilities management, which the Athletics Department of the university has designed. Any student can take the sports business minor as long as the student still has four semesters’ worth of courses to take.

Students will also need to complete a supervised internship with an organization related to sports after the completion of coursework. Students can secure an internship with companies that engage in sports business or intern with Iona’s Athletics Department.

The introduction of such new programs often calls for flyer printing to provide more details about them and help in their promotion.

Marketing department chair and associate professor, Eric Hamerman, Ph.D., said that sports are more than the athletes and the games they play. He added that a group of professionals working in the core business functions are needed to keep a sports organization solvent. He said that this new minor will prepare students to apply their knowledge to sports while also providing them with real-world experience in an internship.

The new sports minor will launch this fall.
