Makerspace program launches in New Rochelle

Iona College in New Rochelle has hired its first designer-in-residence (DIR) at the Hynes Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation.

Founder and president of the Digital Arts Experience, Rob Kissner, will be creating a vibrant Makerspace Experience at the Institute so that students can create, design, and build prototypes of innovative ideas to solve challenges in the real world. There will be a dedicated Makerspace Experience that will span 3,800 square feet with state-of-the-art learning and coworking spaces. There will also be pop-up makerspace experiences around campus so that students at the college can be introduced to the significance of making and creating to enhance innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship.

Kissner will also teach a new course this summer that will introduce students to the maker culture by enabling them to explore such materials as LEGOs, Play-Doh, Tape and paper, and many other mediums. Such novel courses are often promoted throughout a college community with flyer printing.

Founding program director and endowed professor at the Hynes Institute, Christoph Winkler, Ph.D., expressed his delight in being able to bring these capabilities to the campus community. He added that Kissner as DIR will help to build an exciting program experience for the students and will also contribute to building the reputation of the college as a leader in innovation and interdisciplinary entrepreneurship in the region.
