Local venue to celebrate music and literature

Two special events are scheduled at Alvin & Friends in New Rochelle this week. Most likely, the restaurant is turning to several printing services to Print Posters and Flyers informing the community of these happenings.

First of all, The Swamp Donkeys will be making their only appearance in Westchester this season. Based in the New Orleans jazz scene, the group plays blues, traditional jazz, modern jazz adaptations, vaudeville, and other styles derived from their home city. Their lead vocalist, James Williams, has a voice compared by critics to that of Louis Armstrong. Sam Friend, who plays the banjo, is from New Rochelle.

The music starts at 8:00 pm on Wednesday January 7, with a $10 cover charge.

Ilyasah Shabazz, daughter of Malcolm X and Betty Shabazz, will also have a special book signing event later this week. Her most recent book, ‘X: A Novel’, written for young adults, is a fictionalized story of the boy who became Malcolm X. It begins with his childhood and follows him to the age of 20, when he was imprisoned for theft, and beyond to a faith that would lead him to a new direction in life. Ms. Shabazz is a community organizer, activist, and author of ‘Growing Up X’.

The event is on Thursday, January 8 from 7:00 to 8:00 pm. Reservations are required and a fee of $30 will be charged, which includes appetizers and a copy of the book.
