Sumita Furlong, Ph.D. will become the first Chief Diversity Officer at Iona College in New Rochelle.
Her responsibilities will include the administration of programs, training, policies, and services that advance anti-discrimination, inclusion, diversity, and equity at the college. Dr. Furlong will report directly to Seamus Carey, Ph.D., the president of the college. The use of flyer printing is one way to inform a college community of such appointments.
Dr. Carey expressed his pleasure in Dr. Furlong joining the Iona community. He added that Iona has always been committed to ensuring a higher education is available to all students, but more work always needs to be done to address issues of diversity and inclusion. He went on to say that Dr. Furlong will play an important role in making Iona College a model for racial justice.
With 20 years of experience in the area of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), Dr. Furlong has served as Executive Director, DEI at the College of Charleston; Special Assistant to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs for DEI at the University of California, Irvine; and Chief Diversity and Global Pluralism Officer for the Great Lakes Colleges Association in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Dr. Furlong expressed her enthusiasm about joining the college, and her honor in being selected as its first Chief Diversity Officer.
