Bastille day to be commemorated by New Rochelle

A Bastille Day ceremony will be presented later hits month by the New Rochelle Sister City Committee to celebrate the founding on New Rochelle by French Huguenots 329 years ago.

At this ceremony, which will take place in front of City Hall, Mayor Noam Bramson will open with greetings to be followed by Committee Convener Peter A. Korn, who will give a short talk on sister city initiative programs. Another member of the committee, Sheila Sarkar, will then discuss why Bastille Day is celebrated.

The tri-color of the French Republic will be raised and both The Star-Spangled Banner and La Marseillaise will be sung by celebrants and participants. Immediately following the event will be a light reception in the Rotunda of City Hall.

The next day, a special Bastille Day market will take place on Library Green hosted by the Downtown Business Improvement District. Highlight of the market will be French-style goods and products. Berets will be handed out to attendees while supplies last.

The special ceremony will take place on Friday, July 14 beginning at 10:00 am. while the Bastille Day Market will be held on Saturday July 15.

Poster printing companies can be hired to create pieces that can be displayed throughout the city announcing these special activities presented by the Sister City Initiative, whose goal is to deepen the friendship and relationship between La Rochelle, France and New Rochelle.
