The annual Memorial and Awards Ceremony was recently held by the New Rochelle Police Department in observance of Police Memorial Week.
Officers who sacrificed their lives serving the city were honored and the outstanding contributions of department members were recognized at the event, which was held at the Greentree Country Club.
Police Officer Paul D’Erasmo was named Police Officer of the Year and Derek Ortiz, a systems engineer, was given the honor of Civilian Employee of the Year.
Three elementary school students were presented an award by Noam Branson, mayor of New Rochelle, for their Police Memorial Essays. The winning essay was read by Lea Cohen from Webster Elementary School.
Niko Tamburo and Emilio Betim Jusufaj were presented awards for Citizen of the Year by Charles Strome III, city manager.
Joseph Schaller, police commissioner, commented that the exceptional work done over the past year by active members of the department is able to be recognized on Medal Day. It is also a day of a more solemn nature when those sacrificed their lives in the performance of their duty are also recognized and honored, he observed.
