New City also falls under the Rockland County jurisdiction, although this particular grant was earmarked for nearby Ramapo Village. The money from the state means that county taxpayers are no longer left with the burden of paying for inspections and ensures that building standards are in line with county fire codes.
New York State has also tasked Rockland with taking over the safety code and fire inspections in Spring Valley. Stationery printers can be used to produce printouts of fire codes.
Close to 500 uninspected buildings became Rockland’s responsibility when it took over enforcement duties in February. These includes schools, apartment blocks, business premises, and other buildings that officials say have not been inspected in years. The county has put forward a plan to get these buildings inspected and on a schedule.
State senator Elijah Reichlin was discussing state funding at an event where he said:
"Taking away control from a local government should always be a last resort, but when it became clear Spring Valley could not reliably perform basic code enforcement functions, New York State had to step in and assign code enforcement responsibility to Rockland County."
Ed Day, the County Executive, believes that the county will get the necessary funding from state aid and fines.
