Spencer Chiimbwe has been appointed as the leader of the Rockland County Human Rights Commission.
Ed Day, the Rockland County Executive, made the announcement at the beginning of the month in front of several community leaders in New City. The position had been vacant since spring after the county made it known that the acting commissioner had left.
Day had previously stated how keen the County was to fill the position, but the selection process was a careful one. Many aspiring candidates were screened by a panel made up of stakeholders from the County. Everyone on the panel was in agreement that Chiimbwe was the best person for the job.
The appointment will be made final once the Rockland Legislature confirms it, and although the Legislature has met since Chiimbwe’s appointment, this issue was not on the agenda at that meeting. It is expected that the Legislature will address it at its meeting next Tuesday, November 15.
Chiimbwe, who can now start updating his Business Cards, has been a member of the commission since February. He is a resident of Stony Point with considerable experience when it comes to human rights. He grew up in Zambia and used to work for Rockland as a grant specialist, and was one of the team tasked with figuring out how to disburse federal COVID money.
