Rockland County has recently acquired land as part of its long-awaited Open-Space Acquisition Program.
Over the past few months, the county has purchased 26 acres worth of land in 26 different towns. The recent land acquisitions were mentioned during a press conference held by Rockland County Executive Ed Day at Haverstraw Bay Park. This was the first parcel of land purchased for this program in 1999.
One of the recently acquired properties is located at 20 New Valley Road in New City. The parcel covers 11.83 acres and the county paid $4m to the Milich family for it. The sale was completed in March. Sales agreements like this tend to feature Letterheads on them.
Another property that was recently acquired is located in Pomona. The purchase was completed in March and it cost the county $1.39m. The two plots of land combined amount to 13.34 acres and were bought from the Susan Gordon and Edmund Wyatt Gordon trusts.
The acquired sites will be designated as "passive" parks, indicating that there will be minimal development on the land. During his 2023 State of the County address, County Executive Ed Day hinted at the land acquisitions, indicating that the Open-Space Acquisition Program, which had been halted due to Rockland's previous deficit, would be reactivated. The aim of the program is to protect vulnerable sites from being developed and preserve their natural states.
