A senior from Clarkstown High school in New City has been named as a semi-finalist in the National Merit Scholarship program. Louis Truong is in with a chance of winning a full or partial scholarship when he goes to college next year.
The National Merit Scholarship award is a nationwide competition, and is open to US citizens who score high marks on the PSAT/NMSQT tests. This year, 16,000 seniors in high school were named as semi-finalists and the winners of the scholarships will be announced in the spring. Organizers say 90% of those named as finalists will make it to the finals, and half of those will win scholarships.

More than one million students from around the country applied for this scholarship, and the number of semi-finalists is equal to 1% percent of the nation’s high school seniors. Along with taking a test, students who wish to qualify are required to submit applications. These must include information about the student’s leadership qualities, academic performance, extracurricular activities, and any honors or awards received while in school.
Students will know for certain whether they made it to the finals in February and the winners are announced in April 2020.
