After weeks of intense online competition, New City restaurant Opa Breakfast & Sandwich emerged victorious as the region's first "Big Cheese."
The award is given to the winner of Lohud.com’s Bacon, Egg and Cheese Competition. People in the region were invited to vote online to select the best breakfast sandwiches in the city and Opa Breakfast & Sandwich won the competition’s first edition. The Greek restaurant was some way ahead of the opposition, garnering a large number of votes every week in the online poll, eventually totaling 116,545 votes.
According to Yakelin Ruiz, the owner’s daughter, the restaurant saw a significant increase in business as a result of the votes. She said that breakfast favorites like the classic BEnC and the egg, gyro meat, and cheese sandwich are popular choices. Restaurants can visit Print shops to have their Menus made, perhaps including any awards on them.
For patron Angela Palmiotto, the "very crisp" bacon, is the main attraction. However, she modifies it by using Swiss cheese rather than a more conventional option like yellow American.
JV Bagels came in second place in this year's competition. The three sites operated by JV Bagels are in Somers at 325 NY-100, in Shrub Oak on E. Main St., and in Brewster on Carmel Avenue. This neighborhood received 20,994 votes in total, so less than a fifth of Opa’s haul.
