The people from the village of South Nyack will be heading to the polls before the end of the year to decide on whether their small municipality should be dissolved.
If the residents so choose, it will be absorbed by the Village of Nyack and the Town of Orangetown will provide it with municipal services. Petitions in favor of this change have circulated after locals learned of a real estate development planned for the college's campus.
Nyack College closed its campus in 2019 after 120 years on a campus that overlooked the Hudson and is a few miles south of New City. Negotiations to buy the property had been going on for months and concluded this month with the buyer agreeing to purchase the campus’ property for $44m.
Yeshiva Viznitz, the buyer, wants to build residential housing. Soon after the buyer’s identity and plans became public, the mayor of the Village of South Nyack received several petitions that were requesting for the village be dissolved. Mayor Bonnie Christian certified the petitions and the public will now vote on the matter. Print shops can be consulted when creating such petitions.
Rocklands’ County Legislator is a resident of South Nyack and is opposed to the dissolution, while Mayor Christian did not comment when approached by the Rockland County Times. The vote is set to be held on December 17.
