Residents who live in the Montefiore Nyack Hospital near New City will regain access to their open field in the spring.
The hospital had been using the land as a graveled parking lot for almost two years. The hospital has decided to turn the lot back into an open field that will be used by children and parents to play ball games and burn off energy. The land had been leased to the hospital for a brief period while the hospital worked on its medical facility’s garage. Poster printing is often used to inform the public about a change of usage on such plots.
The restoration of the field will start on March 1 and is expected to take three months, according to a letter sent out by James Montesano who is the Nyack Interim Schools Superintendent. The hospital had already stopped using most of the parking lot by the time the letter was sent, with only 20 spots being used until the end of December.
According to Montesano, restoring the field will require demolition work, the laying of topsoil, and planting grass seeds once the weather is warm enough. To aid with the process, attorneys working with the hospital and the school district will put together an amendment to the original lease agreement which was made in 2010. The hospital's new parking garage with 400 spaces will be opened to the public early in 2023.
