The Rockland County Sports Hall of Fame commemorated its 50th anniversary by introducing eight new members.
One inductee was deeply devoted to pole vaulting, and his dedication was such that he once hitchhiked through a snowstorm on the Palisades Parkway with two 15-foot poles to train at West Point. The late Lance Arietta, a graduate of Tappan Zee (TZ) High School's class of 1976, benefited greatly from such a strong work ethic. He not only achieved success in pole vaulting for TZ, winning state titles in both outdoor and indoor competitions, but also while he was on the athletics team at the University of Texas-El Paso.
Mary (then-Brechbiel) Agnetti was inducted for reaching the remarkable milestone of scoring 1,000 points while playing high school basketball. During her first years at Albertus Magnus High, she played in a special league where, despite points being recorded in scorebooks, cumulative statistics were not kept. Agnetti was previously inducted into Mercy's Athletics Hall of Fame back in 2009. She and the other inductees were honored at the 50th-anniversary celebration of the Rockland Sports Hall of Fame. The event, with seating for 240 people, took place at Paramount Country Club in New City in front of a sold-out crowd.
