Pets in Rockland County that are healthy and more than three months old will be able to receive a free rabies vaccination.
The announcement was made by County Health Commissioner Dr. Patricia Schnabel Rupert and Rockland County Executive Ed Day. The shots will be made available for ferrets, cats, and dogs this Sunday, October 6 from 10:00am to 1:00pm at the Fire Training Center 35 Firemen’s Memorial Drive in Pomona. Drop-ins are allowed so people from New City who wish to have their pets vaccinated do not need to make appointments.
All the shots are free. The public is however encouraged to make a $5 donation that will help to offset the county’s investment in the program. Local companies can also give syringes and leashes as Corporate Gifts in order to support the local community.
The conditions for each animal to be eligible for the free shot are:
- The pet must be healthy
- Any dog brought in must be on a leash
- Cats and ferrets must be leashed or brought in top-opening containers
According to state law, all cats, dogs and domesticated ferrets have to be given rabies shots before they reach four months of age, and pet owners who fail to keep their pets’ vaccinations up to date can be fined up to $250. Any unvaccinated pet that interacts with an animal that is suspected to have rabies must be put down or quarantined for half a year.
