Town supervisors will be taking over the project to build a new animal shelter a few miles north of New City.
Five town supervisors are involved in the project. They have decided to take the project in a different direction after the estimated cost of following through on a previous plan to replace the old Hi-tor Animal Care Center doubled. The announcement about the new direction was made by Rockland County Executive Ed Day.
The new plan is based on an idea that was put forward by the town supervisors. They intend to put Rockland Green in charge of the animal shelter. The supervisors have also contacted the Humane Society about helping Rockland Green run the future shelter when it is ready. Operational funds for the shelter will come from towns. The towns license pet ownership and the funds from that licensing are used to fund animal control. The current shelter is located on county land and is managed by a board of volunteers along with paid staff and management who take care of rabbits, cats, and dogs among other animals.
The Hi-Tor shelter was built in the 1970s. The structure is considered to be outmoded despite numerous recent upgrades. The board would also like to relocate the shelter because the dogs are constantly being disturbed by fireworks shows at the nearby Clover Stadium.
