The awards were presented by Ed Day, the County Executive, and Susan Branam from the Rockland County Veterans Service Agency. This year’s recipients of the Buffalo Soldiers Award were Lee Edwards Burns, Sr. and Staff Sergeant Sherlie Louis. The presentation was made at the Rockland County Executive’s Office in New City.
The Buffalo Soldiers Award is given to exceptional African American army veterans who reside in Rockland County. “Buffalo Soldier” was a nickname given to African American soldiers who served in the western regions of the United States in the late 1800s and were recognized for their outstanding courage.
When presenting the award, County Executive Ed Day said:
"There’s no question, the freedoms we enjoy today would not be possible without the men and women who make the brave choice to serve our nation, including these local heroes, and it is my pleasure to recognize their courage."
Staff Sgt. Louis serves as an Aerospace Medical Services Craftsman in the National Guard. She signed up for the Air Force in 2012 with the goal of serving her country and supporting her community. Lee Edward Burns, Sr. is a veteran who served from 1962-65. After his service was over, he took on a position at the New York State Army National Guard and worked there for 30 years.
The awards were presented on February 16. Banner printing can be used for the decoration of venues hosting award ceremonies.
