Emma Cheshire, from Croton-Harmon High School, recently won the Congressional Art Competition for 2015 for the 17th Congressional District in New York State.
She was honored at an awards ceremony for her piece ‘Hand Shadow’, held in Nanuet on April 27. She placed first among 21 entries.
United States Representative Nita Lowey congratulated Emma for winning this year’s competition, and said that she will represent New York’s 17th Congressional District well when her work will be on display in the United States Capitol, where it will be viewed by millions of visitors for the next year.
Jodi Burger, an art teacher at Croton-Harmon High, commented that both the school and the community are excited and proud for Emma, declaring that she created a portrait that shows her technical and artistic abilities, imagination, creativity, and dedication to her work.
This month, Emma’s work will be on display in Washington, D.C. and she will be honored at a special awards ceremony. Her work will be joined by that of Heeyeon Kim of Harrison High School, who place second; Alice Luo, who placed third; and honorable mention winner, Barbara Letizia. Luo and Letzia are from Clarkstown High School South.
The Congressional District could work with a flyer printing company on a sheet with rules and regulations that can be distributed in advance to students who want to enter next years’ competition.
