Shopping mall in Nanuet under new ownership

Alexander Properties, based in New City, has purchased The Shops at Nanuet, an upscale outdoor mall.

The shopping center is on Fashion Drive at the intersection of Middletown Road and Route 59, and just a few blocks from the Nanuet commuter rail station. George Hoehmann, supervisor of Clarkstown, expressed his excitement about this acquisition as Gabe Alexander, principal of Alexander Properties, is looking to make some changes to the mall.

The purchase by Alexander Properties includes the main part of the Shops at Nanuet and the Sears and Sears Auto Center property on the western side. The comprehensive plan of the town calls for a Transit Oriented Development (TOD) zone around the train station in Nanuet. This zone would focus on jobs, services, entertainment, housing, and other amenities that are close to public transportation, which includes buses and a commuter rail.

News of such acquisitions and their ramifications for a community is often made known with flyer printing.

Hoehmann said that he expects to have a discussion with the new owner about building housing units in the area, as that is part of the comprehensive plan. In the meantime, Alexander is working on keeping the current tenants at the mall and finding new ones.

Ed Day, Rockland County Executive, said that the sale of the Shops at Nanuet will mark a new chapter for the county that will bring economic growth and opportunities for the county.
