Nanuet locals concerned about the potential loss of one of the areas historic businesses can now relax, since Rockland County's northernmost gas station, Larkin's gas pump and auto repair shop has been purchased by a Stony Point resident.
Some from outside the area may wonder why a gas station sale would cause so much attention, but to many residents it is a matter of convenience and history.
Larkins, located in Tomkins Cove has been in operation for decades. The previous owner, Pat Larkin, began working at the station in 1940 when he was only 10 years old. Eventually, he worked his way up and purchased the station in his 20s. He remained a fixture at the location throughout his life, insisting on staying involved and working at the station daily until passing away on New Year's Day at the age of 86.
Residents were concerned about the convenient location closing, as well as the loss of what is one of the few full-service stations in the state to offer the service free of charge. The buyer, Jim Maher, is excited with the purchase and is also someone that is aware of the importance of the well-known landmark building.
