Black History Month began with recognition being given to a former United States Marine Corps Sergeant and current Police Officer for the Village of Spring Valley.
Joseph B. Brown was recently presented the Buffalo Solider Award for 2015 by County Executive Ed Day. The award is given every year to a Rockland County resident who is an African-American veteran.
According to Day, Officer Brown has previously served the nation and is now doing the same for Rockland County. He added that his courage and the sacrifices he has made, along with his continued public service to the community, are very much appreciated.
Officer Brown has been a police officer for Spring Valley, a town just a short distance from Nanuet, for over 20 years. Among the groups and programs in which he is involved are the Scholarship Committee Board and the Youth and Police Initiative program of the District Attorney’s Office of Rockland County.
During Operations Desert Shield/Storm, he was in active combat as a sergeant in the United States Marine Corps. He has received several awards for his service, including the national defense service medal, army aviation badge, and the combat action ribbon.
