A resident of Nanuet, Alexander Lam, recently became one of the corporate-sponsored winners of National Merit scholarships of $2,500. He was one of over 15,000 finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program for 2017.
Lam attends Clarkstown High School South and plans to study aerospace engineering. He received the James E. Casey Scholarship.
These scholarships are financed by about 200 company foundations, corporations, and other business organizations. They are given to those finalists who plan to pursue college majors or careers the company wishes to encourage, are residents of communities the company serves, or who are children of company employees. The students also need to meet specific other criteria of the respective company.
Most of these scholarships provide annual stipends that range from $500 to $10,000 per year and can be renewed every year for up to four years of study at the undergraduate level.
The recipients of the $2,500 Scholarships National Merit Scholarship Corporation will be announced today, May 10, and the recipients of Merit Scholarships awarded by colleges will be announced on June 7 and July 17. When the awarding of scholarships has ended, more than $32m will have been given to about 7,500 students.
Poster printing companies can be hired to create items that can be displayed throughout the various communities in the area so residents are made aware of the winners and their academic achievements.
