Principal of Highview Elementary School in Nanuet, Matthew Lutz, has been honored with the Marvin Maurer Award for 2024 from the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence.
Lutz was selected for this award from among educators from 27 countries. News of such awards is often made known throughout a school and the community with flyer printing.
This is the second year of Lutz’s leadership of the school. He had championed an effort across the school to add emotional and social learning into the curriculum at Highview. Faculty and staff as well as students described his endeavors to help students flourish emotionally and academically at the school.
The award given to Litz focused on his implementation of RULER, which is a guide of five steps that teaches children social and emotional intelligence (often called SEL).
RULER itself is an acronym that represents:
• Recognizing emotions in others and in oneself
• Understanding the reasons for and outcomes of emotions
• Labeling emotions with a distinct vocabulary
• Expressing emotions according to social context and cultural norms
• Regulating emotions with helpful strategies
SEL has become an important part of academia these days, so that students learn how to regulate their emotions and maintain healthy relationships in order to become happy and healthy contributing members of society.
Lutz will receive the award during the RULER Implementation Conference in New Haven, Connecticut, on Monday, March 4.
