The first Baby Café in the Hudson Valley and Rockland region recently opened in Spring Valley, sufficiently close to Nanuet that women from that town are likely to want to take advantage of its services.
A nonprofit organization, Baby Café USA has free walk-in sites, where breastfeeding and pregnant women, along with the families, can get personal and individualized support from specialists in the field. There are also group meetings so these women can share their experiences with others.
A $1.2m grant from the New York State Department of Health was received in January so that the Baby Café could be open by the county as a way to encourage women to breastfeed. Rockland County Health Commissioner Dr. Patricia Schnabel Ruppert commented that there are health benefits for both the mother and baby from breastfeeding, and that having this new facility continues the work of the department in promoting the practice.
The Baby Café is located at WIC office on South Main Street in Spring Valley. There will be a grand opening event today from 9:00 to 10:30 am with a ceremony and refreshments, followed by counseling and support until 12:30 p.m.
