The Canstruction International Competition’s Best Original Design for 2024 has been awarded to H2M architects + engineers, a consulting and design firm based in Melville.
Canstruction, founded in 1992, is an international competition for charity in which teams of engineers, contractors, and architects build vibrant and large structures made entirely of canned goods. The structures are then able to be viewed by the public, which votes on them, and the winners in each participating city then move on to the international competition. Once the structures are dismantled, the canned goods used in the competition are distributed to food banks in the local community.
The design by H2M was inspired by “The Giving Tree,” a book written by Shel Silverstein. Close to 7,800 cans of food made up the building. News of such awards and photos of the construction can be disseminated throughout a community with leaflet or flyer printing.
President and CEO of H2M, Rich Humann, said that aside from being an opportunity to give back to the community, the project also builds teamwork, trust, and leadership skills among member of the team. He expressed his pride in maintaining a spirit of collaboration and innovation and thanked Canstruction for helping to shape the firm’s passion for design and convert it into an effort that will help those in need.
