Workshop on offer for Glen Cove savvy seed savers

Autumn is a time when green thumbs put their gardens to bed for the winter, and for savvy planters, it's also a time to harvest and clean seeds for next season.

Glen Cove Public Library’s Seed Library offers a variety of programming throughout the year, and in November, it will host a Seed Cleaning workshop. It will take place online, and the facilitator will walk the participants through the process of preparing their seeds for next year.

Those who participate in the activity will learn how to sort seeds and remove the chaff so that they can be stored. The planners explained that this will increase their viability, helping to ensure as many will germinate as possible. They will also discover why it is important to package them properly and label each packet with details about when, how and where they were harvested, as well as what cultivar they are. They can even make plans to swap theirs with other local garden lovers.

While this function was intended to be held in person, it has been converted to an online activity. Including this sort of workshop in local event guides will help to make sure the community is aware it will be taking place, and these sorts of publications can be prepared by area brochure printing companies.

The “Reap What You Sow” virtual workshop will be on offer this Saturday, November 14. It will kick off at 9:30 am.
