Glen Cove stops, drops, and reads

The Glen Cove Public Library will be celebrating National D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything and Read) Day later this month.

The event encourages literacy and the joy of reading, while also including some activities and prizes.

The celebration will encourage readers both young and old to pick up one of several Books or magazines laid out across the library. They will be allowed to read their material for exactly 15 minutes. Once the time is up, they’ll roam the library in search of clues in a library-themed Scavenger Hunt. Prizes will be awarded at the end of the scavenger hunt for the teams that find the most items.

The Glen Cove Library is holding this event in conjunction with National D.E.A.R Day; a holiday meant to kindle the love of reading in children and adults alike. The idea for D.E.A.R Day was first outlined by author Beverly Cleary in her book ‘Ramona Quimby, Age 8’.

Readers who loved the book started organizing their own D.E.A.R. days and wrote to the author asking for book recommendations. She worked with schoolboards and libraries to find a wide range of books for all tastes. Now the day is celebrated nationwide, typically on Cleary’s birthday.

No doubt promoted through flyer printing, the National D.E.A.R. Day celebration will be held on April 17 from 2:00 to 3:30 pm at the Glen Cove Public Library, located at 4 Glen Cove Ave. Attendance to the event is free, and all ages are welcome.
