The people of Glen Cove are preparing to do more than sit on their couches this Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
The city is looking to commemorate the birthday of the famous civil rights leader with a march and an educational program aimed at bringing the life and work of the Nobel Peace Prize winner into the modern day.
The Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will begin with a symbolic march through downtown Glen Cove, ending at Finley Middle School. Afterwards, a program of visual and vocal presentations will be offered by the Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Commission, with the theme ‘Dr. King’s Legacy Through the Eyes of Youth’. The program’s goal is to educate young people on the life and work of the slain Civil Rights leader, while inspiring the community to aid the poor and disenfranchised in their own midst.
The presentation, likely being promoted through newsletter printing, will also feature musical performances by a number of local choirs and dance groups. It is sponsored by the City Council, which is providing funding and volunteer organization for the day, and the Glen Cove School District. This is the 32nd such event to be held in Glen Cove.
The Glen Cove Tribute to Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will begin next Monday, January 18 at 8:45 am at the First Baptist Church located at 7 Continental Place. The presentation after the march will start at 9:30 am at Finley Middle School on Forest Ave. Admission is free. Anyone looking for more information should check the Posters or website.
