Residents in Glen Cove are looking forward to celebrating the birthday of Civil Rights icon Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with the 33rd Annual Symbolic March and Celebration. The event brings the community together with music, speeches, and other performances.
The symbolic march will run from the First Baptist Church to the Wunsch Arts Center. Some Banners will be printed in honor of Dr. King, but participants can bring their own Signs and memorabilia as well. The intent is to honor the spirit of the marches that were once a hallmark of the Civil Rights Movement. Once the march has wended its way to the arts center, the rest of the celebration will begin.
The event will feature a number of guest speakers and notable people, including the Mayor. The Glen Cove High School Select Chorale (notable for having performed before the Pope in Rome) will also sing, as well as the middle school choir. The high school drumline will also perform alongside dancers from the ESOTA Dance Company.
The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Symbolic March and Celebration will take place on January 16. The march begins at 8:45 am starting at the First Baptist Church, located at 7 Continental Place. The Celebration will start at 9:30 am at the Robert M. Finley Middle School, located at 1 Forest Ave. Admission is free to the public. Anyone interested in more information should contact the city directly.
