Glen Cove goes bald for charity

Residents in Glen Cove and around Long Island are being encouraged to 'Brave A Shave' for children with cancer this year.

Sponsored by the Downtown Cafe and the St. Baldrick's Foundation, the event is one of the premiere fundraisers for cancer research.

The St. Baldrick's Foundation has been around since 2004, but the first events they held were in 2000. Over the years, they have raised over $200m, all of which has gone into funding research into causes and cures for childhood cancer. Its events are commonly held in and around St. Patrick's Day, the name of the foundation being a play on words ‘Patrick’ and ‘Bald’.

For the fundraiser, contributors sponsor either an individual or team with donations. On the day of the event, the participants have their heads shaved completely bald to represent solidarity with children suffering from cancer. Donors can choose to make a block donation or a donation per head shaved. The Downtown Cafe has consistently raised over $30,000 each year for this event.

The Brave a Shave event will be held on March 19 starting at 12:30 pm at the Downtown Cafe, located at 4 School St. Donations are still being accepted for the event. Anyone looking for more information about St. Baldrick's and their work should check their Brochures or visit the website.
