Glen Cove folks asked to become citizen scientists

A call has gone out to Glen Cove birders seeking support for a day that gives citizens a chance to play an important role in scientific research.

The Annual Great Backyard Bird Count will give both new and seasoned bird watchers some extra experience in spotting and identifying a variety of species. It will be held at the Garvies Point Museum and Preserve, and the only cost to take part is the usual admission fee to the facility.

Those who register will be asked to identify and count the birds they see at the site’s feeding stations and other areas, and binoculars and basic field guides will be supplied. With some luck, the birders will spot some rare species and maybe a lifer, and can feel satisfied in the knowledge that they are lending scientists a helping hand.

When making arrangements to host this sort of activity, it can be a good idea to have some extra field guides prepared ahead of time. These can be crafted by a printing services company and given to each birder so that they can continue to ID the birds they see in their own yard.

The 2021 Great Backyard Bird Count will be hosted at the museum on Saturday, February 13. It will run from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm.
