Residents in the Glen Cove area are getting excited for the 180th Anniversary of the Glen Cove Volunteer Fire Department. The department is celebrating with competition and an elaborate parade.
The festivities will kick off with the Fifth Battalion Drill which will be conducted at Tappens Beach. Residents can turn out and watch eleven different fire departments join in the competition. The departments will compete on a variety of different tasks that will test their mental and physical fortitude in drills that are meant to simulate actual firefighting conditions. Common drill tasks include tower rescue, hose hauling, and obstacle courses. At the end of the drill one of the departments will receive recognition as the top in the district. T-Shirts bearing the battalion Logo Design and food will be sold during the event.
Afterwards the fire department will join together with the police, city government, and other local service and charity organizations for the Anniversary Parade. All the firefighters and police officers will be wearing their dress uniforms and visitors can expect to see bagpipes, marching bands, classic cars, and more at the parade. A full list of participating floats has yet to be announced.
The Glen Cove Volunteer Fire Department 180th Anniversary Celebration will be held on June 17 starting at 9:00 a.m. at Tappens Beach. Attendance is free to the public. Anyone looking for more information should check the city's newsletter printing.
