A Glen Cove event will offer parents and kids a chance to spend some time outdoors this summer.
The ‘Basics of Outdoor Survival’ will give both kids and adults an introduction to skills they can put to good use if they ever find themselves lost on the forest. It can also be fun a way for the participants to challenge themselves, and since it is intended for those who are from ages five to adults, it makes for a parent/child outing.
The students in the workshop will learn how to build a fire and navigate through the wilderness. Knot tying and signalling will also be covered, and since outdoor survival can often include finding food, the learners will discover how they can find and identify some commonly available edible plants.
Admission to this activity is included with entry to the Graves Point Museum and Preserve, which is where the class will be taking place. Guides that offer some basic survival tips for the wilderness can be prepared to give out to each student in a session like this, and Stationery printers may be called upon to supply them.
All those who would like to make sure they know what to do if they are ever lost in the woods and far from help are welcome to register for this activity, which will be offered on July 18. Questions about the workshop can be directed to 516-571-8010.
