As the season changes from winter to spring, the sheep at Queens County Farm Museum are getting ready to sport a new hairdo. The annual Sheep Shearing festival will help make them cool and comfortable for the summer, and Glen Cove families can be a part of the fun.
The sheep who call the farm home will each get a haircut during the event, and the crowd can cheer them on. While the farm staff perform the task, they will explain what they are doing and why it is important, and after this, the visitors can discover more about how raw sheep fleece is transformed into yarn and other naturally sourced fibre products.
There will be demonstrations of carding, spinning, and dyeing sheep wool throughout the day, and the kids can make a craft to take home with them. Hayrides will be on offer, and a plant sale and farm tours have also been planned.
One of the features of this celebration that can be especially fun for kids will be the composting station. Here, they can meet some helpful creepy-crawlies that turn organic matter into fertile soil, and they can even find out how they can adopt a worm for themselves.
